MUSIC THEORY FOR PRODUCERS

Ages 16 to Adult

The rules behind the magic—so you can break them with style.
You don’t need a classical background to create great music—because classical music isn’t music theory, it’s just one style among many. What will level up your sound is understanding the core theory behind how music works. This course won’t have you reading sheet music or memorizing Italian terms. Instead, you’ll learn the why behind the sounds—why certain notes connect, chords hit, and rhythms groove. It’s about making intentional choices, sharpening your ear, and creating with confidence and clarity

Exploring music theory from a producer’s point of view, you'll start with rhythm and groove, dive into scales and chords, and discover how progressions shape emotion. Then we’ll get hands-on, applying those tools to melody, harmony, and song structure—all in the service of making music that feels intentional, emotional, and uniquely you.
You’ll leave this course not just knowing the “rules,” but knowing how to bend them to your sound.

Prerequisite: Prior experience with an instrument or digital audio workstation (DAW), or instructor approval.

MUSIC THEORY FOR PRODUCERS

Ages 12 to 15

A foundational course for young musicians and producers.
This course is designed for students who are ready to deepen their understanding of how music works and start using that knowledge to create original music. It’s engaging and age-appropriate, but it’s not a “fun with music” class—it’s a structured introduction to applying music theory in a creative, hands-on way.
Students should already have basic music skills—whether from lessons, school band, or prior experience with an instrument or DAW.

Through guided lessons and projects, students will explore rhythm, scales, chords, and how these elements function in the music they love. They’ll learn how to build chord progressions, craft melodies, shape song structures—and most importantly, how to use those tools to bring their own musical ideas to life in a digital production environment.

By the end of the course, students won’t just have created original tracks—they’ll have a solid foundation in how to think like a producer, write with intention, and use theory as a creative tool in any genre.

MUSIC PRODUCTION

Music production is the process of creating and recording music using various techniques and technologies. It involves everything from songwriting and arranging to recording, mixing, and mastering. Music producers are responsible for overseeing the entire process and ensuring that the final product meets the artist's vision and industry standards. In this class, we will cover the six stages of:

  • Songwriting
  • Arrangement
  • Tracking
  • Editing
  • Mixing
  • Mastering

To learn how to produce music for beginners, you will need the necessary equipment to create a finished track. The main components of a starter set up include:

- Computer (Desktop or Laptop): To host your music production software
-
DAW (Digital Audio Workstation): The program on your computer where you will write, produce, record, mix, and master your music. Examples are: Garage Band, Logic Pro, Cubase, ProTools, Studio One, and Ableton Live.

- Audio Interface: To convert microphone and instrument signals into a format your computer and software recognize.

- Headphones/Monitors: A decent speaker or headphone setup to hear all of the frequencies leveled out equally.

- Microphone: If you’re recording your own music tracks, an all-round mic is a good starting point.

- MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) Controller: Sends MIDI data to the DAW to control virtual instruments, effects, and other parameters.

Prerequisite: Music Theory for Producers or a practical knowledge of music theory.
